Motivational Interviewing in Sherwood Park & the Edmonton Area
Resolve ambivalence and find your own motivation to change — rather than being pushed.
What motivational interviewing is
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centred approach designed to strengthen a person's own motivation to change. It's particularly useful when someone is ambivalent — they can see reasons to change but also reasons to stay the same, and they're stuck in between.
MI works by exploring that ambivalence with curiosity rather than pressure — helping the person find their own compelling reasons to move forward.
What it's used for
- Ambivalence about therapy itself or making a specific change
- Health behaviour change (exercise, nutrition, substance use)
- Readiness for treatment or intervention
- Work and career transitions
- Relationship change and boundary-setting
- Athletes navigating retirement or identity shifts
What to expect
MI sessions are conversational and collaborative. Your psychologist won't tell you what to do — that's the point. Instead, they'll guide you in exploring your own values and goals, examining what's getting in the way, and building the internal motivation to take steps that feel genuinely yours. Often integrated with other approaches as the first phase of work.
Ready to figure out what's actually getting in the way of change?
If you're stuck between wanting to change and not knowing how — or whether it's worth it — motivational interviewing can help you find your own reasons to move forward.
