What existential therapy is

Existential therapy is concerned with the deeper questions of human existence: meaning, freedom, responsibility, and how we face inevitable uncertainty. Rather than focusing primarily on symptoms, it explores how a person is orienting themselves to their life — and what gets in the way of living authentically.

It's particularly useful during major transitions, losses, or moments when the questions feel unavoidable.

What it's used for

  • Loss of meaning or purpose
  • Major life transitions (career, relationships, identity)
  • Grief and facing mortality
  • Existential anxiety and dread
  • Midlife questioning and identity shifts
  • Values clarification and direction-setting
  • Burnout tied to deeper questions of purpose

What to expect

Existential therapy is reflective and philosophical in nature, but it's not abstract. Your psychologist will work with you to examine what actually matters, where you feel free and where you feel stuck, and how to build a life that reflects what you believe. Often integrated with other approaches like logotherapy or ACT.
