Work with the body, not just the mind — because the nervous system holds what words sometimes can't reach.

What somatic therapy is

Somatic therapy is an umbrella term for approaches that engage the body as a primary site of therapeutic work. Rather than treating the body as separate from psychological experience, somatic approaches recognize that stress, trauma, and emotion are stored physiologically — in tension, posture, breath, movement, and nervous system states.

Common somatic approaches include Somatic Experiencing, sensorimotor psychotherapy, and body-based mindfulness techniques.

What somatic therapy is used for

  • Trauma and PTSD, especially when talk therapy hasn't been enough
  • Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation
  • Anxiety held in the body (tension, tightness, rapid heartbeat)
  • Dissociation or feeling disconnected from the body
  • Chronic pain with a psychological component
  • Burnout and physical depletion
  • Athletes and performers seeking body-awareness skills

What to expect

Somatic sessions involve paying attention to physical sensations — not just talking about them. Your psychologist will guide you in noticing what's happening in your body, working with those sensations gently, and helping your nervous system complete responses that got interrupted. It can feel different from traditional therapy, but for many people it creates movement where other approaches have stalled.
