Big Mouth

Description

Big Mouth is a great show for exploring parts of the self because it openly portrays the messy, confusing, and often funny realities of puberty and identity development. The characters each represent different aspects of growing up—such as insecurity, desire, shame, and self-discovery—making it easy to see how complex the "self" really is. By using humor and exaggeration, the show normalizes experiences many people feel but rarely talk about, creating space for reflection and self-compassion. It encourages viewers to understand that all parts of themselves, even the awkward or uncomfortable ones, are valid and worth acknowledging.

Why we recommend it
"I recommend that adults watch Big Mouth because it provides a playful, yet honest, way to revisit the challenges of growing up. Through the lens of narrative therapy, the show helps viewers externalize their own experiences with shame, fear, or desire by seeing them represented as exaggerated characters—like the Hormone Monster or the Shame Wizard. This process makes it easier for adults to separate themselves from negative internal stories and re-author those narratives with more self-compassion and humor. By laughing at the struggles of the characters, adults can gain new perspective on their own past, normalize their experiences, and reshape how they tell their personal story moving forward. *DISCLAIMER: The show uses crude humour and strong language. If you do not like shows similar to the Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. This may not be the show for you."
